Trofeo Mezzalama XXIV Edition

The oldest ski mountaineering race in the world will take place on Saturday 26 April 2025, from Breuil-Cervinia to Gressoney-La-Trinité across the Monte Rosa massif
The 24th edition, part of the prestigious La Grande Course circuit, introduces a historic change in the ski mountaineering competition that has connected Breuil-Cervinia with Gressoney-La-Trinité since its inception in 1933. This year, for the first time, teams will consist of two mountaineers instead of the traditional three. “The decision to reduce the team size to two,” explains François Cazzanelli, “was made together with technical director Adriano Favre to make the rope team more agile and safer. It will be easier to manage the rope, especially on technical sections like the west face of Castor and the Castor ridge, significantly reducing the risk of error.”
“We expect a high level of technical skill from the participants," continues Cazzanelli, an alpine guide. "While the Trofeo Mezzalama has a strong athletic component, we focus in particular on mountaineering skills and the ability to navigate high-altitude environments. Efficient handling of the carabiners and belaying techniques in critical sections will be essential.”
Emrik Favre, Cazzanelli’s colleague and a member of the Glacier Marathon technical staff, emphasized the importance of using ice axes and ice screws for safety in the event of an accident.
“All competitors must carry, in addition to the standard ski mountaineering equipment, an ice axe, an ice screw, and one 20-metre rope per team. The ice axe can help slow or stop a fall on an icy slope, while the ice screw becomes essential if someone falls into a crevice.”
Regarding mandatory technical equipment, Cazzanelli specified that crampons with toe and heel connections made of cord will not be allowed. "Crampons with toe and heel connections made of cord will not be allowed. Only crampons with metal connections will be permitted," he stated.
Glacier conditions are currently favourable. Autumn snowfall and recent precipitation have restored a wintry appearance, filling crevasses and covering the exposed ice that had become increasingly visible in recent seasons. “There are still a few months to go,” concludes Cazzanelli, “but the conditions at high altitude suggest that we will have a top-level Trofeo Mezzalama on 26 April.” For registration and regulations, visit: www.trofeomezzalama.it
